Supporting Students’ Ability to Access Learning:
- 1-2-3 RESET™ is a trauma-sensitive framework that is embedded in evidence-based approaches created by Dawn Paulson, MS, OTR/L, and Heather Schmidt, MS, OTR/L, to support students’ ability to access learning opportunities. The approach supports children grades K-5 through intentionally targeting easy-to-implement strategies in the areas of Relationships, Environment, Self-Regulation, Empowerment, and Task to improve student’s mental health and well-being.
1-2-3 RESET’s™ Unique Approach to Trauma-Sensitive Education:
- R – Relationship: Emphasis on establishing trust, cultivating intentional interactions, attuning and co-regulating.
- E – Environment: Intentional classroom set-up to promote regulation through visual supports and address sensory processing differences.
- S – Self-Regulation: Use of mindfulness, breathing, movement, body check-ins, bilateral integration, rhythm and music, and drawing to manage big emotions.
- E – Empowerment: Promoting growth mindset, collaborative problem solving, invitational language and classroom jobs to promote safety and belonging.
- T – Task: Increase student success and engagement with intentional task selection and task modification.
