The Power of Progressions: Untangling the Knotty Areas of Teaching and Learning Mathematics

Teaching mathematics is about more than just isolated lessons and topics to cover—it’s about building progressions that move students’ thinking forward and reveal the deep connections between concepts. In this session, we’ll explore how problem-based lessons can be intentionally sequenced across a unit to develop understanding that builds over time. By identifying strategies and engaging with tasks, we’ll examine how to create a coherent learning experience that balances application, conceptual understanding, and procedural fluency.

Participants will:
 Unpack the importance of application, conceptual learning, and procedural fluency and their role in moving student thinking through a mathematical progression.
 Engage in grade-appropriate 3-act tasks and understand how implementing low-entry, high-scalability tasks can reach all students. Participants will identify when and how these lessons can be used throughout the scope of a unit.
 Understand how problem-based lessons can be used within the instructional framework (opening, work session, close) and the purposeful moves required to orchestrate an effective closing session.
 Understanding the meaning of fluency and how it should be built through context.
 Unpack the components of a lesson string and the role coherence plays in building meaningful fluency.

Keys to Beginning Reading – Summer 2025 Cohort

What is this training?

This practical course provides the background knowledge needed to teach all the components of beginning reading instruction. The instructional practices are designed to easily transfer to classroom lessons and can be integrated with any reading curriculum or published reading program.

This asynchronous course is broken into 11 asynchronous modules:

  • Module 1: Literacy Basics
  • Module 2: Oral Language
  • Module 3: Phonemic Awareness
  • Module 4: Phonics & Advanced Word Study
  • Module 5: Fluency

Who is this training beneficial for?

Any educator who teachers reading. While the content is designed for K-3 educators, educators outside of these grade levels may find this training to also be beneficial. Title funds may be utilized for staff outside of K-3.

Does this meet the Act 20 requirement?

This training meets the K-3 professional development Act 20 requirement as this training is found on the CERI (Center for Effective Reading Instruction) approved list.

What are benefits of this training?

By working in a cohort with other CESA 3 educators, we aim to provide a collaborative and supportive space to share ideas and grow in our learning together. Our trainer, Jim Addison, brings his passion, experiences, and lifelong mission to improve literacy systems to facilitate 12 hours of course accelerators. In these accelerators, he aims to bring research to life and share how the information in the course can directly support educators of all age or grade levels.

How is the course set up?

While the course itself is asynchronous, we have set the pacing up with the busy teacher in mind.

Modules 1-3 will be completed during our first in-person kickoff day at CESA 3 in addition to our facilitated sessions.

Modules 4-8 will be completed separately with two 2-hour sessions to review and extend the material.

Modules 9-11 will be completed on your own time and reviewed at our final in-person session.

Love and Logic is a classroom management and discipline approach designed to help educators create a positive learning environment while teaching students responsibility, self-regulation, and problem-solving skills. It was developed by Jim Fay and Dr. Charles Fay and is widely used in schools to manage behavior effectively.

Key Principles of Love and Logic

  1. Shared Control – adults and students share control of decisions, fostering responsibility and self-regulation.
  2. Shared Thinking & Decision-Making – Instead of imposing rules, students are encouraged to think critically about their choices and consequences.
  3. Natural Consequences – Students experience the natural outcomes of their actions in a supportive environment.
  4. Empathy Before Consequences – adults show empathy rather than anger when enforcing consequences, helping students learn from their mistakes rather than feeling punished.
  5. Building Positive Relationships – Strong adult-student relationships create a safe and respectful environment, reducing behavioral issues.

Strategies in the Classroom

  • Enforceable Statements: Instead of commands, adults phrase rules in a way that gives students choices (e.g., “I allow students to use class materials as long as they use them appropriately.”).
  • Delaying Consequences: Instead of reacting emotionally, adults take time to think before giving a consequence, allowing for more thoughtful discipline.
  • Setting Limits with Choices: Offering choices within limits helps students feel in control while still following expectations (e.g., “Would you rather complete your work now or during recess?”).
  • Using Empathy, Not Anger: A calm, empathetic response to misbehavior helps students reflect on their choices (e.g., “That’s so sad. I see you chose to break a rule. How do you think we can fix this?”).

Benefits of Love and Logic in Schools

  • Reduces power struggles and adult stress.
  • Encourages students to take responsibility for their actions.
  • Helps create a respectful, positive classroom climate.
  • Improves student self-regulation and problem-solving skills.
