Course Description: This course is designed to provide school administrators, school mental health professionals, security personnel and law enforcement with an understanding of why threat assessment is an important part of violence prevention in schools. Topics include the following: how threat assessment fits in the framework of comprehensive school safety, overview of research and findings related to threat assessment, investigative themes and core concepts of threat assessment, key aspects for creating school-based threat assessment teams and process, how to determine the appropriate response to concerning behavior, and potential strategies for threat management. Training will involve lecture, discussion, and tabletop scenarios.

Instructors: Prior to serving as Director of OSS, Trish Kilpin was a school social worker for more than 30 years. She is a certified National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) PREPaRE 1 and 2 trainer, a Sources of Strength trainer, a National Threat Evaluation and Reporting Office (NTER) Master Trainer, and an Association for Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) Certified Threat Manager. Susan Williams joined OSS as Threat Assessment Specialist following 31 years as a school psychologist. She is certified by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) as a Trainer of Trainers for the PREPaRE 1 and 2 crisis prevention and response curriculum and is a National Threat Evaluation and Reporting Office (NTER) Master Trainer.
